This so-called Fifth Collection of xxxHoLic combines a pair of fairly light comedic episodes with two rather dismal looks at the human condition as exemplified by two different female patrons of Yuko’s shop. These latter episodes prove the inherent flaws in this otherwise shapely series. Not that the stories are poor – far from it; but rather the lackluster and minimal low-budget animation of which this series is often guilty.

The first episode, Self-Mutilation, consists largely of Yuko and her “assistant” Watanuki discussing the legal, ethical, and intelligent bind their latest client finds herself in. ( And by extension, mighty of the human condition regarding the roles that “destiny” and “choice” play in our lives. ) While the dialogue can be exciting, particularly Yuko’s psychological analysis, it creates its absorb unintentional predicament intriguing choice for the viewer: 1) sit and read unending subtitled dialog, or 2) listen to the same dubbed while almost NOTHING happens onscreen! Even the lush character designs fail here to distract from or disguise the laziness of the animation throughout most of the episode, despite the soundness of the script; including Yuko’s mouth flaps, which seem strangely out of line with the rest of her static features.

Things improve greatly in the next two episodes, Ground Cherry and Unreasonable, as we disappear outdoors and are joined by other regular members of the cast. Seeking to continue to expand Watanuki’s supernatural experiences, Yuko again teams him for his spiritual protection with his “rival” Doumeki and sends him forth to “participate” in a parade of rather benign monsters. Benign, that is until they percieve HUMANS in their midst; then determine to eat them! At this point all is saved by the reappearance of my popular supporting character, the paralyzed sprite Ame-warishi, who even apoligises for almost killing Doumeki when last they met! This is a fun seek at creatures who resemble those in Entertaining Away and the best episode on this disc.

A rather comic but fun winter battle in a nearby park between snowmen brings together not only Watanuki, Doumeki, and Himawari at Yuko’s invatition, but also Ame-warashi, her “protector” rain sprite Zashiki-warashi, and Mokona; even house-bound Maru and Moro manage to accept in on the action. Here we learn the rather fascinating fact that it’s only in settings like this that Yuko can communicate with Doumeki, since he is physically unable to ever enter her shop. These two middle episodes compose up to a large extent for the rather static opening and closing. The latter, Atonement, again brings a frantic woman, Yuri, who has a spot with a particular photograph, seemingly with a life of its possess and definitely in need of exorcism.

Absolutely droll. Sizable series. Can’t wait for season 2 to advance out and recall it.

…this film is (for the lack of a better word) a dream–a dream you would not willingly want to wake up from. Completely and utterly mesmerizing, “The Dreamers” pays homage to film, Paris, the 60’s, and worship. Apart from some of the awkward moments this movie tends to reveal sporadically, the movie itself was not mired by the abnormalities of some of the main characters. Though, this movie is one of the greatest I’ve ever viewed, it is not for everyone and cannot be readily recommended without reviewing some of the pros and cons I caught.

CONS:

-First off, if you’re offended, in any contrivance, by frontal nudity from either sex… caution: it contains a lot!

-For some, if the ending is a chief factor in deciding that you like a movie, it is possible you could be dissapointed (it ends in an unlikely manner) . But if you can luxuriate in the ending, it doesn’t afflict the film at all… Maybe people were disappointed by the ending because they didn’t want it to waste

-If not accustomed to slower-moving movies, based on a load of anecdote depth or the like opposed to action or thiller movies, then it could be a let down.

But the cons are heavily outweighed by the pros…

PROS:

-For film buffs, Bertolucci doesn’t dissapoint. The b/w segments intermingled within the storyline are anything short of genius and, for me, was the most dazzling and inviting fraction of this movie.

-For anti-censorship viewers, this movie could seem to be sent from heaven, because it doesn’t leave considerable out.

-The acting is on a par with almost perfection, all three main characters are played flawlessly and completely select on the people they are supposed to evoke… Eva Green is especially fantastic.

-The soundtrack is helpful as well. The tone that the music sets is completely appropriate and only adds to the dreamy atomsphere of the film; totally reminiscent of the 60’s.

-A perfect representation of Paris in the 60’s; eventhough the film’s centerpoint is the main characters and their relationship with one another, the artist’s home of Europe couldn’t be portrayed to be more beautiful (with the exception of the student riots in foreground) .

It is difficult to finish thinking of this movie, even between viewing other movies… if I could i’d give it six stars.

Bertolucci’s revolutionary film takes position in the tumultous summer of 1968 in which a young American, Matthew (Michael Pitt) has reach to Paris to peruse French. He becames a cinephile and a frequent patron of the Cinemateque Francais, the breeding ground for the Unusual Wave movement. Shortly after the firing of Langlois, he meets fellow cinephiles Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Cassel) and scores an invitation to dinner.

That’s how it begins, but this movie isn’t linear and it cannot be deciphered merely by the order of events. Quite frankly, I was amazed by Fox Searchlight releasing what may be one of the most revolutionary and sexually progressive films of unusual years. In the streets, the young and broken-down found their revolutionary voices in 1968 and fought to institute governmental changes, but inside this chic apartment another revolution is taking station as well only this one involves fewer persons.

Matthew is clearly enamored of Isabelle and Theo (though this latter relationship isn’t as developed as in “The Holy Innocents”, which I found took away from the storyline) but he is not transfixed by them. He realizes that though they explore the world, they purposely support themselves outside of it. Theo’s father correctly observes early in the movie that to understand the world and change it, you have to become allotment of it. This is a lesson Matthew is constantly aware of and tries to pass on to his fresh friends. The first inkling of how grounded he is in this reality comes with the Zippo scene (my approved) in which his casual observation of how a simple lighter fits into every possible region. Life allows us to fit into many possible spaces as we constantly change and constantly search for the ideal plot, but the cosmic lesson in it is that we will fit into them and consequently, will fit ideally into the one we remove out. We must allow ourselves to inhabit the spaces and become piece of them in order to test the waters all the while and we do this by leaving the comfort of our novel area and become portion of the overall world.

The sexual relationship between Isabelle and Matthew was passionate, realistic and completely believable. We live in very hypocritical times where nudity has become more taboo than violence and it was a pleasure to contemplate young people making appreciate with all of the intimate gestures that remove dwelling between lovers. It obviously takes a broad director to pique our cinematic memories and remind us that it takes two nude bodies to compose worship. The nude scenes between the brother and sister were a bit troublesome to the audience I saw this movie with, but the incestual nature of their relationship in the book has been erased. To me, they objective seemed dangerously, asphixiatingly lag to each other, the nudity being unbiased fragment of said obsession.

All three actors do a exquisite job, but it takes a valiant director to ruin a film with a police action about to prefer spot to the sounds of Edith Piaf’s “Je Ne Regrette Rien”. Bertolucci understands his young protagonists and knows the many errors they will continue to commit before they select and decide what is correct and what is base because he has been there himself. And he regrets nothing. We should all be so lucky.

You would probably have to go assist to early Godard to derive a movie as bold, shockingly silly and brilliantly incisive in its analysis of the uneasy alliance between art and commerce as the sci-fi/film noir/spaghetti-western/Shakespearean musical-tragicomedy, Masked and Anonymous, the current movie from Bob Dylan and Larry Charles. As with some Godard, I can’t say whether it’s a comedy or a tragedy – but it’s definitely a masterpiece.

To verbalize the Hollywood cast to utter in the script’s poetic, ornate language could not have been easy but the actors do an exemplary job. Nearly all of them manage to hit unprejudiced the proper label of cartoonish hysteria to give the film a sense of unity and harmony. Except, that is, for Bob Dylan. His character, Jack Fate, is the mild in the search for of the storm, the one rational character surrounded by a world of swirling insanity and director Charles gets a lot of humorous mileage out of the contrast

between Dylan’s deadpan delivery and the over-the-top performances of nearly everyone else; it’s like taking a Humphrey Bogart character out of the ’40’s and plunking him down in the middle of a massively absurd science-fiction landscape – the resignation and world-weariness of the film noir hero remains hilariously intact. The very thought is inspired and the execution is flawless.

The performance footage of course is terrific. Dylan and His Band play eight songs live on camera and there is a warmth, an intimacy and a relaxed quality to the performances that you will only discover at Dylan’s best club shows. Although none of the songs are heard in their entirety, these sequences are nonetheless beautifully filmed. There is none of the rapid-fire editing and pointlessly roving camera that mars the filmed footage of so many live musical performances. Instead, Charles’ strategy is to have the band crowd together and film them in close-up with a wide-angle lens. There are numerous long takes in which all of the band members can be seen and when the camera does travel, it’s deliberate and meaningful.

In a current interview, Larry Charles said he never apprehensive about

finding a distributor for the film and that Dylan had told him long ago not to effort about the film “in the short term.” However the film _is_ received in the short term, the richly orchestrated tapestry of sound and image that is Masked and Anonymous is determined to hold Dylanologists and film fans alike busy for decades.

Two things will really add to the appreciation of thid film. 1. An extremely start mind and 2. a working knowledge of Bob Dyaln; his history, his philosophy, his music. This is not a high budget film. Contemplate more surrealist art house film. It does have many stars that most people will inspect, but that isn’t the focus, nor point of the movie. This is the highly metaphorical legend of a musician and how he can’t control his area in a chaotic society, but can remain upright to his contain self amid the chaos.

The very loosely woven place becomes secondary to the individual events which produce up the film, each scene revealing a nugget of Dylan’s perspevtive. Dylan often delivers comments that manufacture the entire scene seem irrelevant. In this contrivance this is, at times, a very humorous film. Dylan seems relaxed, especially compared to the other films he has made. The feeling is powerful more “Don’t Ogle Benefit”, worthy less “Hearts of Fire”. He does preserve his wooden movement and he delivers his short lines as commentary more often than conversation.

The soundtrack is exceptional. The performances are a sincere treat. All Dylan songs, but fresh versions which fit seemlessly into the texture of the movie. The cramped girl singing “The Times They are A-Changin” will at least choke you up a bit, and possibly assist us to remeber exactly how distinguished that song meant 41 years ago, and how considerable it serene means today.

I certainly recommend this to Dylan fans, especially those who respect or care for his perspective on the world. Anyone who enjoys non formulatic surreal films may also come by great enjoyment in this movie. There is too grand to win everything up in your first screening when looking for exciting comments or details. I would recommend trying to witness and a glean a feel for the film initially. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to invent sense of every detail. In that procedure it is like most of Dylan’s music, to be experienced repeatedly.

4) The commentary is awesome. Adam and Burt have a titanic chemistry and really seem to fancy both the movie and the note. Their tongues are firmly in their cheeks druing the commentary (Adam West’s views on Bruce Wayne alone are worth the ticket of admission), but you will learn about the production and such secrets as:

The team at Fox had a lot of treasure for this movie and it shows. Remove this DVD and score Fox to release some series episodes with Adam, Burt, Julie Newmar (Catwoman) and Frank Gorshin (Riddler) doing commentary!

Who knew that the campy 1960s’ choose on the unlit superhero Batman would age so well? 39 years later, “Batman: The Movie” tranquil is wholly appetizing even for the most adrent Batman fan.

The set of the film is paperthin. Batman (Adam West) and his sidekick, Robin (Burt Ward), are out to thwart the four most unsafe villians in Gotham: Catwoman (Lee Meriwehter), The Joker (Cesar Romero), The Penguin (Burgess Meredith) and The Riddler (Frank Gorshin, who recently left us, sadly) from taking over Gotham. To lure Batman into a trap, they kidnap Batman’s secret identity, Bruce Wayne. This is more or less all the area there is. There’s also somehing about destroying people with a dehyrdator, but other than that, there’s no accurate residence. And that’s the film’s charm.

It’s a ample allotment of 1960s’ nostalgia. The “holy (insert random word or phrase here), Batman” schtick is tranquil hilarious, and the cast is clearly enjoying themselves. The extras for the dvd are surpisingly delicious. The commentary is awesome and the other extras state, but it’s the movie that is really worth watching.

I saw this movie when it was in the theater in 1989. I liked it so grand that I had to take it on VHS. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor star as two innocent guys-one deaf, one blind, and both are on the rush for a assassinate they didn’t commit! Add the amazing talents of Joan Severance and Kevin Spacey, and you have the makings of one well scripted and very silly movie! Oh, and let’s not forget Alan North as the police chief. The film’s region makes for a cops and robbers type of suspense. Of all of Gene Wilder’s and Richard Pryor’s works, “Peruse No Unpleasant, Hear No Dismal” is as equally humorous as “Silver Scoot”, which makes it a must consume!

I’ve seen this film five times since it was first released.

As I grow in age and inspect this movie, I feel almost robbed that I wasn’t either around, or aged enough to bask in the pure genius that both Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor held.

This film is about a blind man (played wonderfully by Richard Pryor) who’s down on his luck and in need of a job. Luckily for him, a deaf newsstand owner (played with all the amusing gusto he can muster by Gene Wilder) happens to be hiring.

Pryor owes a bookie substantial time, and when the bookie comes looking for him at his unusual status of employment, chaos ensues because he’s murdered. Wally (Pryor) doesn’t glimpse it, and Dave (Wilder) doesn’t hear it. The murderers come by away and Dave and Wally are suspected. Their misson: distinct their name.

Craziness and hilarity ensue.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are two highly underrated talents before the camera. The adventures that these two dreadful characters go through is something that a wide audience can savor. The spend of two ailments such as deafness and blindness is not exploited or made fun of, impartial feeble for sizable laughable timing and situations.

If you’re a fan of grand comedy, and gorgeous splendid action that features two amusing geniuses, I highly suggest this film.

There are so few Patrick Troughton episodes out there. His stories were ravaged by the BBC many years ago, and only a handful have been recovered. The first fable is missing, necessary episodes like “The Highlanders” and “The Enemy of the World” are gone. Even episodes with well-liked villains such as the Daleks and Cybermen are missing.

Thankfully one of the few stories collected intact is the last fable. The ten piece masterpiece, “The War Games”, is the swansong for the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe. It also introduces the Time Lords as a group, shows us a rival Time Lord to the Doctor in the build of the War Chief, and has a nice, fable feel to it that hasn’t really been captured in too many other stories. It was also the last of the unlit and white stories.

There are positive problems with the record. For one, it’s quite well-padded and redundant in parts. Truth be told, it could’ve been done as a four-part narrative and worked every bit as well, but that’s a minor gripe.

Special features on this three-disc collection include such things as commentaries, features on the Target novels and the amusing strip, and considerable more!

Overall this is a heck of a anecdote and a mountainous collection. Worth every penny!

Dr. Who was doing record storylines befre they were en vogue. This was the most ambitious of the Who stories at the time, and was only eclipsed(not in quality mind you) by the Trial of a Timelord storyline. The narrative can bag a bit repetitive at times, but it is a suitable chronicle, well worth watching. You objective knew watching the parts that something vast was going to happen! Troughton was so astonishing in the role, and so many don’t “know” him as well as the other actors who played the lead role because so many of his episodes, including some of the most noted episodes are lost for all time. This one is monumental in terms of what happemns.

One of the best parts of this epic is the treatment of the timelords and Gallifrey(though neither term is sued here) . Both were veteran sparingly to vast conclude. We are given morsels, tidbits of where the Doctor is from and the power of “his people.” Though I loved the stories that followed about Gallifrey and the Timelords, it was nice not to know a lot about the Doctirs past or where he came from. The inclusion of backstory added a lot to the character, but in the process, removed some of the mystery and aura surrounding the character. This is really must peek Who. Pity none of the characters introduced here, especially what seems to be another timelord(the Master anyone?!? ) never returend. Perhaps with the popularity of the fresh sereis, that can be rectified. This really is monumental Who, but it is best viewed in chunks and not in one showing, or the repetitive parts will open to annoy.

I have seen many anime’s (and absorb a lot as well) and I must say that this one definately suprised me. I understanding it had mammoth animation (definately theater quality) As for the dubbing, you got some ample names doing the voices. I feel that kiefer sutherland did mountainous at doing his fragment. As for elizabeth berkley, it took me a while to gain expend to it, but while the legend unfold’s, you realize how broad her relate fits the role as well. Not to mention, this movie has grand re-viewing properties, I was more than cheerful to inspect this movie twice in a row (which I did!) Not to mention, it can obtain a dinky confusing, but the place by the demolish is easy to understand, and the movie stays in your mind. It’s hard to compare, but it’s easy to demonstrate that’s it’s suited. You should for positive acquire this if you are a anime fan. If your trying out the genre, this is a astronomical commence to your collection along with akira and ghost in the shell. Also, there definately is violence, but when the rating says “brief nudity” they mean it, there really wasn’t great nudity at all, maybe 1 or 2 scenes that I can remember, which lasted for a few seconds. The first time I had seen this movie I enjoyed it. But it wasn’t until I’d seen it for the second time that it struck me what a astounding movie Armitage 3 is. The animation is obedient. Berkley and Sutherland were absolutely perfect for the voices. the plost comes across confusing at first, but it all comes together quite nicely by the destroy.The characters are well written and you fetch yourself empathising with the heroes, so that by the extinguish you are correct in the movie. Colossal for a first time anime expierience. (The soundtrack to this film is something I’d appreciate to procure my hands on. It pumps the movie along quite nicely. You’ll sit down and gaze the credits objective to listen to the ending theme!)

The chronicle is a very favorable fantasy, a young king coming of age among depraved advisors. The presentation is marionettes, some of the most amazing I’ve ever seen. Each one is beautifully crafted and articulated, and each is a positive personality. The puppeteering is gracious. The figures go beautifully well, even in new actions like swimming. They recede well even when they end in with each other so powerful that their strings risk tangling.

What makes this movie fresh is the puppets’ awareness that they are puppets. The opening scene is a suicide in which one character cuts his beget head-strings. Sword-fights center on cutting the other character’s strings. Characters are fully aware that they are carved from wood, and subject to the kinds of decay that wood can experience. Even birth consists of a carved, wooden doll, brought to life when – well, you’ll have to peruse for yourself. There’s no need for suspension of disbelief, at least at this level: these puppets are clearly and consciously puppets.

All of which leaves a strangely involuted query of free will. The characters all act because of their possess impulses, but disappear only when their strings recede them. What connects that will to that motion? I wonder whether this is the sense that puppeteers sometimes win, when the painted wooden characters seem to effect personalities of their hold.

There is nothing like “Strings.” It’s a kid-safe yarn, but you don’t have be a kid to be fascinated.

This is an fable fairy chronicle, with kings and princesses and swordfights and quests and romance and betrayal and death and…

…marionettes?

Yup. The whole movie is acted by marionettes with shrimp facial movement, but seemingly infinite physical limitations.

I was startled by the opening sequence. An elderly king sits over his desk, in the rain, writing a suicide letter to his son. My first plan was that it was a bit over-dramatic to have “rain” on the inside of his castle, but I went with it. As I carefully followed along to his voice-over, about the two warring civilizations and the ability of his son to unify the country, I saw this king raise his sword over his head…

…and carve his head-string. Tiresome.

I sat goggle-eyed for the next 90 minutes, seeing things I really couldn’t contain.

Beautiful shots of strings ascending to the heavens…(I understanding, so THAT’S why it was raining indoors. There are no ceilings) …swordfights with warriors aiming for the strings…marionette SURGERY that was horrifying to me, a surgeon!

The state in and of itself is a fairly standard one: nothing unique if you’ve ever read a classic fairy myth or your basic Shakespeare.

But the addition of these…these “strings’…enables the filmmakers to comment on the nature of God, the connectivity between one another, the fragility of life…even the mischief between two children.

…the birth scene was surprisingly touching. As was a death scene captivating a musty passe man. The draw they re-interpret life and death with “string” theory is simply heavenly.

There is imagination and creativity in this film at a level I don’t consider I’ve ever seen. We’re talking Peter Jackson/Steven Spielberg-type cinematic creativity, but also with ingenious storytelling and astounding visuals.

And as you’d question, the technical puppetry here is beyond conception. The draw they salvage the tilt of a head or a shrug of a shoulder fair fair. It’s wonderful.
